Blatant violation of Ebay shipping policy

There is no doubt I love Ebay for buying and selling. However there is nothing that pisses me off more than sellers who put in ridiculous prices for shipping your items.

You all have seen them especially with the small USB flash drives. They are listed with price of $4.99 and shipping of $24.99! Come on, what are we freakin’ idiots. They weigh what about the same as 3 ostrich feathers?

So while looking for some Christmas gifts I came across this um mm seller.

One of the popular toys this year is the Vtech Smile Pocket. As you know when you shop on Ebay you should always do a search under the Completed Listings section to see what the items have been selling for recently. Just so you can actually see your saving some green.

Anyhow I came across this listing:

Ebay Shipping Violation

What really pissed me off was not only was the title misleading “sealed”, when it was actually a used product. Look at the shipping charges!

Damn $30.84 for Parcel Post! and then I actually couldn’t believe I was seeing this…$72.31 for Priority Mail!

It you read Ebay’s shipping policy, anyone with half a brain can see this is a violation. Hey seller Priority Mail Flat Rate Box is $8.90 and this would fit, freakin scammer*.

*Unless of course the Ebay auction numbers are all screwed up (which I doubt) then I apologize ;)

Have you paid “overpriced” shipping on Ebay?

    This infuriates me. These sellers think they are getting away with something, but when I see this type of thing, I usually report it. I make my living selling on eBay and I go to great lengths to respect my customers and offer fair shipping fees. The people who charge these exorbitant fees give all eBay sellers a bad reputation.

    Cheers~

    Excessive Shipping Charge on Ebay: Good or Bad for the Buyer?

    I’ve often heard buyers complain about a seller who overcharges on shipping. They feel that they are being cheated. Let’s look at a couple of examples to see if this is really the case.

    For our purposes, let’s assume that a seller is wanting to sell a $30 product and make a 10% or $3 profit on the sale. Since the actual shipping charges will be the same regardless of how much is charged, we can ignore that amount. Ebay final value fees are 10% of the actual item amount. PayPal fees are roughly 3% of the total amount (item + shipping).

    Example #1

    Shipping Charges = $0 (free)

    In order to make the desired profit of $3, the seller would need to charge $37.93.
    $37.93
    - 3.79 (10% ebay fees)
    - 1.14 (3% paypal fees of cost + shipping)
    = $33 (the seller’s product cost of $30 + $3 profit)

    The total cost to the buyer would be $37.93 (item cost) + $0 (shipping) = $37.93

    Example #2

    Shipping Charges = $10

    In order to make the desired profit of $3, the seller would need to charge $26.79.
    $26.79
    - 2.68 (10% ebay fees)
    - 1.10 (3% paypal fees of cost + shipping)
    + 10.00 (shipping charges)
    = $33 (the seller’s product cost of $30 + $3 profit)

    The total cost to the buyer would be $26.79 (item cost) + $10 (shipping) = $36.79.

    As you can see by the above examples, while the seller is still making the desired $3 profit, the buyer is actually paying $1.14 less in example #2. This is the amount that has been saved in Ebay and PayPal fees.

    Perhaps the next time that we see a seller who we feel is overcharging on shipping, we should thank them for passing the savings on to us.

    Mark,

    You make a great point. However the way Ebay is set up it is not really the platform for trying to make back one’s profit through shipping.

    In Ebay’s case shipping is meant to be the cost to get the item to the bid winner.

    The easy fix for the seller to insure they get their profit is to start their auction at a higher price with no reserve. (starting auctions at .99 and then having a reserve price is another irritating topic of its own. :)

    As you may know perception carries more weight than fact or logic. So based on this when most people locate an item they will usually scan through the shipping charges and then narrow down which items to bid on from there.

    Again thanks for your input.

    I stopped going to eBay months ago because of this. Out of curiosity I went there today looking for a deal on a small household item. Sure enough…almost ALL of the starting bids on the item were under 1.00 with shipping fee’s up to 30.00. Even the ones with “free” shipping are wayyyyy over priced. Since my husband is a Postal Carrier I can tell you with 100% accuracy that this is COMPLETE scam. The hilarious part is that I went to a retailer website and found the item NEW for less (including shipping) than what I would have paid for the item USED on eBay (with scam shipping). What is REALLY funny is that I’ve been to a couple other sites about the same issue and many “sellers” try to justify their bad behavior. You will never see me on eBay again and I sincerely hope people have enough sense to realize that 9x’s out of 10 you really ARE NOT saving money.

    EBay Excessive Shipping Problem & Solution
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    I’m sick and tired of excessive shipping fees on Ebay and Ebay does NOTHING about it. I’ve reported MANY items for excessive shipping but nothing ever changes. Laptops with $39.95 to some with $69.99 and even $99.99 shipping charges. MP3 players and cell phones and flash drives with $39.99 shipping.The laptops shouldn’t be more than $15-$20 at most. Even 1 tiny less than 1 ounce LED for $15.99 shipping UPS Ground! The cell phones, MP3 players, and flash drives shouldn’t be more than $9 shipping priority 3 day US Postal Service! All theses prices are for standard UPS Ground Shipping! Everytime I report an item I watch it to see if the price or other identical items from the same seller change but THEY NEVER DO!

    It’s just a way of cheating people counting on them looking at the bid price not expecting way overpriced shipping ! Ebay doesn’t seem to care as long as they are making money!
    Keep complaining to them, stop shopping, or be VERY careful of what you are paying for shipping. A tiny IPod MP3 player or cell phone might cost you $39.95-$59.95 more than the bid price. Beware of unlisted shipping with $39.95 or more shipping in the fine print !

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    THE VERY EASY EXCESSIVE SHIPPING SOLUTION !!!!!!!!!!!!
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    EBay tried to say there is too many listings to keep up but it would be easy to fix by the seller entering the weight of the item and UPS or other shipper fiqure out the shipping like it already does on some items. If someone wants to charge more than 1-2 dollars for shipping they should give a good reason why and Ebay should check those listing ! Try to justify $39 shipping for a cell phone or MP3 player or flash drive! All of those things easily fit into the 3 day priority package of the US Post office or a couple of dollars for UPS! No more hiding a HUGE charge in the shipping or fine print.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    P.S. ++++BEWARE OF FAKES & SCAMS++++
    Ebay also does NOTHING to stop known FAKE MP3 players & memory cards that are marked 4 or 8 gig but are hacked 2 gig players or memory cards. They also allow many other OBVIOUS scams to be listed like $1.99 Radar Detector Coupon that only sells you a booklet. Paypal won’t help you recover shipping charges either !
    Everybody needs to start complaining and stop buying on Ebay until these easily problems fixed problems are fixed!!!!!!!!

    ebay is global and the US != world
    many sellers are from overseas, say like from hong kong or china.
    it is easy for parcel post to reach $20 or evn $30 dollars
    and express DHL/UPS to reach $80 when shipping to US.
    so its a good idea to check orgin of shipping.
