Exxon and the High Court Put Alaskans over a Barrel
Well it never fails that our wonderful Supreme Court once again comes to the rescue of big business. Today the high court has handed down its verdict and overturned the lower courts ruling on how much punitive damage money Exxon must pay to the Alaskan citizens for its causing the nations larges oil spill.
You can read more detail in my other post Exxon The Death of an Alaskan Lifeline, however bottom line is the Alaskans citizens were royally screwed. Our Supreme Court has cut the punitive damage reward from $2.4 billion to a measly and disgusting $507 million! What the hell does that amount to? About 8 days worth of Exxon’s quarterly profits? Let’s break it down. There are about 33,000 Alaskans that are going to be compensated if and when Exxon coughs up the dough. This means each one gets approx $15,000 for Exxon ruining their way of life and destroying their entire source of commerce. In Exxon lingo this means that each citizen is worth 76 barrels of oil. (42 gallons of gas per barrel you can do the math) This is such a disgusting display of our legal system’s loyalty. Our laws are designed to protect the citizens NOT corporations. The oil companies are already initiating their plan to kill off the middle class with the high gas prices. So my question is what in the hell is it going to take for the people of this country to stand up and say enough is enough? The last time a government tried to pull shit like this, the United States of America was born. Think about it.
